Rachel Nguyen, That’s Chic

I had the amazing opportunity to interview one of my largest influences in the industry, Rachel Nguyen, girl boss of her stellar blog, That’s Chic. I had a lot of fun coordinating this mini-interview with her as she inspired me to allow myself to take breaks, stop overthinking, and ultimately do what makes ME happy.

Tell me aboscreen-shot-2017-01-10-at-3-49-15-pmut the startup of That’s Chic. Did you ever expect it to be as successful as it is now?

No way! I started it in high school before social media (outside of Myspace and Facebook) was ever a real thing. So weird to think about it in that sense. But yeah, was just having fun and happened to start it at the right time because it grew into an industry!

Do you have any plans to further your progress of That’s Chic?

I want to keep making videos, but I’d love some help with being less hands on in the business side of it and just focus on the creative parts.

What is the most rewarding aspect of That’s Chic?

Being a positive part in someone’s life

What was the biggest setback you’ve experienced and what did it teach you?

The biggest setback is that it’s a 24/7 job. You almost always have to be on, whether you’re mingling at an event to keeping up with fresh content. There’s always something to do and never a time for a break. But it’s taught me how to work efficiently and know it’s okay to disconnect.

How did you cultivate your personal style and feel bold enough to wear it with confidence?

Wear what you like and don’t overthinking outfit-building. If you feel good in it, you will wear it with confidence.

What’s your advice for someone who wants to bring their blog to the next level and get some major attention?

I know it’s so over said, but I think being yourself and not trying to fit some mold.

How do you maintain inspiration if you’re feeling unmotivated and lethargic?

I don’t, I let myself feel that way because it means I’ve overworked myself. But it’s still active time to do whatever healing I need and a break. Usually after a week, I’m itchy and can’t wait to get back to work and make something.

What’s your favorite quote?

As poetic as I’d like to get about this, ultimately, “no one gives a f*ck” BUT in a good way. Of course people care about you, but no one cares to the point that they would dissect your being the way you, yourself would.

What’s your biggest tip for being a girl boss?

Stop overthinking it and jump in.

How did That’s Chic impact you on a personal level?

I grew up with it. It’s my entire being online and the ripple effect of everyone in my life is because of it. All the jobs I’ve worked on. Everything is because of my blog in one way or another. But that’s because it’s been a part of me for so long and given me so many opportunities. I can’t imagine my life if I hadn’t had it!

Thank you so much Rachel for giving me the chance to interview you!
